Fried rice balls and pepper are very easy to make. They have only very few ingredients but they are still very tasty. I like fried food but I avoid frying as much as possible, I probably fry something once every two or three months.
The downside of frying is that it smells, it’s not very healthy and it’s annoying to wash, but the result is oh-so-good… Plus this recipe is perfect when your fridge is empty – like it happens to me every goddamn times and make me feel like I don’t actually make food shopping every week…
Positive: Very cheap to make!
Negative: Easy but all in all, from start to finish, you will have to wait about an hour before to taste those delicious rice balls.
Ingredients for 20 rice balls:
- 200g basmati rice
- 1 small red pepper
- 1 small onion
In your pantry:
- 2 tablespoons gram flour (chickpea flour)
- paprika, chilli powder (or any other spices of your choice)
Cook basmati rice in salted boiling water as indicated on packaging.
Wash red pepper, peel onion and cut both into very tiny dice.
Drain rice when cooked and allow to cool down a bit.
Combine rice and vegetables, then add a pinch of salt, a drizzle of olive oil, gram flour and spices of your choice. Mix well.
Tips: Prepare a small bowl of water next to you for the next step: to form each rice ball, keep your hand slightly wet in order to prevent rice from sticking to your hands.
Scoop out a handful of rice into one hand and form a rice ball. Repeat process until you finish all the rice and set aside in a plate. Place rice balls in the fridge to firm up, about 30 minutes.
Add breadcrumbs to a large bowl and roll rice balls inside to coat them.
Heat 2cm of sunflower oil in a large frying pan and cook rice balls and pepper on each side until golden, about 10-12 minutes.
Place on kitchen towel to absorb excess of oil. Enjoy warm.
My advice: Make sure to cut vegetables into very tiny dice otherwise you will eat raw onion!
