10 foods to give a child with diarrhea

Diarrhea is a word no one really likes to say but as parents, unfortunately, we have to be poop experts. Obviously we aren’t all doctors but the least we can do is knowing what to feed our child when dealing with constipation (see related post) or loose poop. So after many researches, here is my top food list to help cure mild diarrhea:


  1. rice
  2. cooked potatoes (ex. mashed potato)
  3. pasta
  4. cooked carrots
  5. banana
  6. cooked apple (apple purée)
  7. yogurt
  8. lean fish preferably steamed or boiled (like sole, cod, bass,…)
  9. lean meat preferably grilled (like chicken, turkey, ham…)
  10. hard cheese

Last time I noticed loose poop, I made my toddler some mashed potato with ham and a few slices of boiled carrots on the side (fortunately he loved them). If I follow this list as soon as he has mild diarrhea then it never last much.

Food to avoid:

  • wholewheat products
  • pulses and beans
  • green vegetables
  • raw fruits/ vegetables (except banana)
  • fried food
  • fat and sugar

Remember to always give plenty of water to drink to your child, you can never go wrong with that.
